«Definisco il lavoro
che sto presentando
come “teatro multisensoriale”
dove voce, suono, colore e movimento
trovano ciascuno una vita propria
e insieme vanno a rappresentare
un’unica espressione poetica.»Philip Glass
Symbol of the neighborhood of San Donato in Turin, where it lies Piazza Barcelona, is the bell tower of Santa Zita, of the church of Nostra Signora del Suffragio, known as the ‘Pencil Point.’ Designed by Faà di Bruno in 1886, it is the second spire in Turin in masonry after the Mole Antonelliana (83 m). According to a legend, it was the blessed himself who wanted the bell tower to be particularly high, so that the clocks placed on the four sides could be seen by all the workers in the area, so that they they could not be deceived about working hours.
The square is designed to build a middle ground, a human time.
The arrangement of the works accommodates in areas for gathering, meditation and of play. In the square, one can focus on the present, accepting it without being distracted by the past or future. The fruition, never the same itself, is inclusive and personal, “different and right for all.”
Surrounded by trees and lavender, the square features four entrances, two of which have stairs. At each entrance is placed a portal, a backdrop that conceals to the eyes (height 7m), while revealing itself to the hands in a tactile map.
The experience consists of exploration.
For the visually impaired, it is a search of the sculptures and seating, facilitated by the dimensional change of the flooring in the proximity of the works. For the normally sighted person, the discovery occurs upon overcoming the obstruction to access.
