Design per il territorio – prof.ssa Viviana Trapani
Cartastorie is a cultural publishing project, a monograph divided into sections, which aims to establish and strengthen territorial relationships that gravitate around the know-how about making with paper.
The volume becomes a container for a pilot project of research, design and heritage that proposes knowledge exchange among contemporary artisans, artists, designers and curious people.
A first section engages artisans, designers, researchers, cultural workers and theorists
to investigate issues pertinent to the themes of territorial heritage and production in today’s society through research and archiving of local manual productions.
The second part of the volume catalogs and collects the stories of the surveyed actors, documented through texts based on unstructured interviews and photographs, explaining their background, history, required materials, tools, techniques, processes and thier key products. The content showcases a cross-section of the productive reality related to manual making through paper, spanning different sectors including art, craft, design and graphics, and publishing.
The project fits within the phenomenon of (re)launching craftsmanship as a cultural sector capable of transferring social and cultural aspects from a local to a glocal plane. This phenomenon fits within the production context defined by Burt Nanus and Warren Bennis, as early as 1987, as the V.U.C.A. environment, an acronym for Variable, Ucertain, Complex, Ambiguous.
^ Systemic Logics
The reactions of each decision on countless levels, different from the one in which it operates, require an understanding of systemic logics and the creation of models of complex reality.
+ Adisciplinarity
Phenomena are not explicable through a single body of knowledge. The single-disciplinary view of the phenomena in which we act is hardly effective; phenomena are adisciplinary, and mediation between knowledge is the way forward.
^ The product-service-communication system
The material-only dimension of things is in crisis. Every phenomenon we deal with is a product-system composed of an integrated service, communication and product component.
